Route Description - East Borneo
9 Days / 8 Nights
Day 1: Embark in Tarakan (or Berau). If the starting point is Tarakan, optional visit to the mangrove and proboscis conservation park in the afternoon. Overnight sail to Derawan.
Day 2: Check dive and second critter dive in the jetties of Pulau Derawan. Sail to the Bagans during lunch to look for whale sharks in the afternoon.
Day 3: Full diving day in Kakaban, including the hammerhead site. Visit Jellyfish Lake.
Day 4: Full diving day on the east coast of Maratua, in famed sites such as The Channel and Nunukan Express, with large schools of barracudas and bigeye jacks.
Day 5: Full diving day on the west coast of Maratua, including the thresher shark site of Midreef and the big swirl of barracudas at Fusilier. Afternoon visit to the natural canyon of Halo Tabung for a dip.
Day 6: Diving Karang Muaras, to look for the thresher sharks and other pelagics.
Day 7: Dive the manta sites in Sangalaki, and afternoon visit to the turtle rookery at the ConservationCentre. Night dive in Pulau Samama.
Day 8:Two morning dives in Maratua, and afternoon sail back to departure port.
Day 9: Transfer to the airport after breakfast.
*Optional extension 2-3 nights river trip to the orangutan reserve of Tanjung Puting in south Kalimantan can be done flying Tarakan-Balikpapan, overnight in Balikpapan and flight Balikpapan-Tanjung Puting the morning after.
