Route Description - East Greenland - Scoresby Sund, Aurora Borealis
The East Greenland – Scoresby Sund cruise crosses the Arctic Circle into the home waters of multiple species of whale. The expedition will spot huge icebergs as it journeys into the largest and deepest fjord system in the world. Along the way the Northern Lights is guiding the way.
Day 1: On the Iceland Road
Guests transfer from Reykjavík to Akureyri by chartered bus (booking required). After arriving in Akureyri, they board the ship, which departs for the Denmark Strait.
Day 2: Sailing to East Greenland
The ship crosses the Arctic Circle, with sightings of seabirds and possibly whales, and nears Greenland, with the first icebergs in view by evening.
Day 3: Earth’s Largest Fjord
The expedition enters Scoresby Sund, visiting glacier fronts and basalt columns via Zodiac. If conditions allow, a landing at Charcot Havn and a walk to the Charcot Glacier are planned.
Day 4: Colors of the Cape
A Zodiac cruise near Sorte and a visit to Harefjord, known for its autumn colours and musk oxen sightings, are planned.
Day 5: Enormous Bergs, Arctic Hares
The group hikes from Sydkap to Nordøstbugt, passing whale bones and ancient Thule houses. Non-hikers will join the group later for a second landing.
Day 6: Settlement at Scoresby Sund
A tundra landing on Liverpool Land and a visit to Ittoqqortoormiit, Greenland's largest settlement in the area, are planned. Guests can explore the village and observe local life.
Day 7: Stewart Ø
The ship visits Stewart, a hunting ground for local residents, with potential sightings of polar bears, narwhals, and ancient Thule dwellings.
Day 8: Remote Shores
The expedition sails through Turner Sound and Rømer Fjord, remote waters where narwhals may be spotted.
Day 9: Sea Life
A day at sea to observe marine life, such as whales and seabirds.
Day 10: Journey’s End at Akureyri
The expedition concludes in Akureyri, with a return transfer by chartered bus to Reykjavík.
